Kerry Dark Skies
Orion As Seen In Dark Skies
The Kerry International Dark-Sky Reserve has been designated Ireland’s FIRST International Dark Sky Reserve by the International Dark-Sky Association (Dark Sky Link), one of only 3 gold tier reserves on the planet, and the only gold tier Reserve in the Northern Hemisphere.
This means that on clear nights the sky in this South West region of Ireland is simply stunning, with many astronomical sights seen through the naked eye as can be seen say in the Grand Canyon or the desert plains of Africa. Constellations can be viewed here with many more stars than are shown on the usual sky maps. The beautiful band of the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy, Star Clusters and Nebula’s are just some of the naked eye wonders to see without the aid of any astronomical equipment or filters.
Knightstown.
Boston’s Bar Valentia Island.
Only a 10 minute walk down from Foxhill, the walk back always seems to take longer…..
This is our local pub a real proper Irish Bar with a slate floor and bar and an open fire…. The Guiness is not bad either so they say!!
The Royal Valentia Island
The Royal Hotel and Pub Valentia Island, steeped in history lovely food and occasional live music. The Royal was built around 1880 when the slate quarry and the atlantic cable company was in full swing. Valentia Island was sometimes called Valencia as written on the photo. Only 800 meters walk from Foxhill. Again the walk home is usually longer! Excellent Resturant and Pub Food available all year round.
The Royal is situated in Knightstown which was designed by Alexander Nimmo in 1830. He was commissioned by the Knight of Kerry to design the new village on Valentia Island in County Kerry, which was later named Knightstown. Amongst other projects, he is credited with designing the road from Galway to Clifden and the harbour of Roundstone in Connemara. In the 1830s he redesigned over 30 harbours on the western Irish coast. At Limerick one of his major projects was the Wellesley Bridge which was constructed 1824 to 1835 (it is now known as the Sarsfield Bridge).
With a Peter Street a Jane Street a pub called The Royal a Cricket Team, Tennis Courts and Clock Tower this town has a truly English heritage!!
Portmagee Village (PORGmagee to some….)
Portmagee Village, approx 3 miles from Foxhill with the amazing restaurant and live music of The Moorings Pub featuring live music and various other events. Excellent restaurant that serves food all year round and also has pub food / sandwiches. New Years Eve here is world famous due to the New Year / Old Year custom where the old year man walks the village and then he is “shot” allowing the new year, a younger man, to take his place. An old tradition going back 300 years!
Geokaun Mountain
For a small fee, Geokaun Mountain, on a good day is second to none, you can see all around the area and even as far as Dingle Bay. Well worth a visit. See the link above. The small island you can see is Beginish Island it is currently uninhabited, the last remaining residents being 2 elderly brothers who left the island in the 1990s. There are a small number of holiday homes on the island which are used seasonally. The island is used for sheep farming and by tourists in the summer months who use the island’s beaches for recreational purposes.
